Norton-on-Derwent

This walk is a country ramble nearly 7 miles long and includes a climb and descent of 30metres (100ft) so that it is more demanding than most of our half day walks.

It is anticipated that the walk will take about 3 hours and members must therefore study the description of the walk and decide whether or not they are confident that they can complete it comfortably before participating. The walk will be conducted in accordance with whatever Covid restrictions are in place on 12 August but there is no requirement for prior registration for the walk.

We will meet in the car park of Malton & Norton Golf Club, Welham Road, YO17 9QE, where the Club has kindly allowed us to park our cars, at about 10.00am and start walking at 10.15am.

The initial part of the walk is on a surfaced road through the golf course before continuing along a path with several stiles before it reaches a wood where it rises gently uphill with a further stile before descending to join the surfaced Menethorpe Lane leading to the hamlet of Menethorpe. Here there is a meadow where snacks carried by walkers may be enjoyed before continuing the walk over a further stile to join the Centenary Way on the east side of the river Derwent. This is a narrow and uneven trodden earth path, that may be muddy so that poles may be required for balance, which leads north over a further stile to a point near Malton railway and ‘bus stations, from where the return to the Golf Club is completed via Welham Road.

Malton & Norton Golf Club has confirmed that walkers are welcome to order lunches at the club restaurant if they so wish and there are of course several other options for lunch in Malton and Norton.

The walk leader is Mererid Hunt who may be contacted on 01653 690992

All Members wishing to take part in the walk must please inform the leader, Mererid Hunt, of their names and mobile telephone numbers so that the numbers of walkers may be known and recorded prior to the start of the walk.

 Follifoot to Spofforth. 4.5 miles

A 4.5 mile walk which starts in Follifoot with an easy walk along the side of Crimple Beck to Spofforth and then returns over undulating field paths with a steady rise of about 40 metres to Follifoot. The pace will be set to suit slower walkers and there are a small number of stiles to be negotiated.

To get to Follifoot take the A59 out of York towards Knaresborough and turn left onto the A658 at the roundabout just before reaching Knaresborough. After approximately 3.75 miles on the A658 turn left when you see the sign for Follifoot.

In Follifoot park in the main street opposite the Harewood Arms and meet outside the Harewood Arms for a 10am start.

The Walk Leader is Dorothy Pope who may be contacted on 07985 553523

 Riccall Round. 4.5 miles

A refreshing walk in open country above the bank of the River Ouse and around the village outskirts. Pass through a 'pre-enclosure' field, a Viking landing point and examine some local allotments!

Flat, easy walking. Cattle sometimes graze on a short stretch of the river bank, but plenty of space for avoidance.

Dogs should be kept on a lead.

Meet at the Regen Centre Car Park, Landing Lane, Riccall at 10.30am

No. 415 bus leaves Piccadilly 3 times an hour and stops in the village. Please check before you travel. The Regen Centre is on the outskirts of the village. Follow Silver St and Church St, pass the Church on the left and into Landing Lane. The Regen Centre is on your right, behind tall hedges. Sat Nav may take you up in a cul-de-sac at the back of the centre!

As usual there is a £1 contribution, per walker, on the day.

We may have to limit numbers according to the Government guidelines at the time.

Thursday 13th May 2021 at 10.30am

 Skipwith Common

Skipwith Common is a National Nature Reserve of woodland and open heathland. During World War Two it was the site of an aircraft base, some remains of which are still visible.

The two hour walk will follow clear, flat paths around the reserve. We may see Hebridean sheep and Longhorn cattle which have been introduced to help manage the vegetation, plus deer and other interesting birds and plant life.

Dogs may be brought on the walk but must be on short leads for the whole walk.

The walk starts at the parking areas on Cornelius Causeway. Take the A19 south out of York, towards Selby and turn left at the roundabout onto the Market Weighton road, A163. Head along this road for about a mile then turn left at the sign for Skipwith Common, along Cornelius Causeway. There are parking areas on both sides of the road, near a bend.

The path could be muddy and uneven in places, with some tree roots, so stout footwear is advised. There are no stiles on the walk.

A maximum of 20 people will be allowed on the walk so BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL.

Name and contact telephone number is required for contact tracing if necessary; details will be destroyed 21 days after the walk. You will be sent a copy of the Guidance for Walkers, which sets out the rules we must follow to keep one another safe from the Covid Virus. If you come on the walk, it will be assumed that you have read and agree to comply with these guidelines.
