CWP 2019/7 A coastal walk from Cayton Bay to Hunmanby Gap
Standard: Moderate. Distance 8 miles.

An 8 mile coastal walk from Cayton Bay to Hunmanby Gap

An excellent walk on Saturday from Cayton Bay to Hunmanby Gap. The walk followed the Cleveland Way along the coast to Filey Brigg and the Country Park. We stopped here to eat our lunch and had lovely views out over Filey Bay and Flamborough from the cliff top.

After lunch we descended to Filey beach and had a very welcome paddle. We had very hot tired feet at this point in the walk!

It was then a pleasant walk along the firm sand to Hunmanby Gap where we met our coach and were taken to Flamborough WI for an excellent tea: two lots of quiche each, large home made sausage rolls, ham and about six different salads, plus lots of puddings (see photograph). And they gave us containers to bring the uneaten food home with us.

Ingleby’s coach will leave Memorial Gardens at 8 30 am and Rawcliffe Bar P&R at 8 45 am, returning to York by 7 pm. Cost of the trip to include coach and tea will be £22.

Mostly flat, no stiles, but could be muddy in places. Lunch available afterwards in Hovingham at The Malt Shovel or the local bakery.

Meet and park in the public car park near the village hall in the centre of Hovingham for a 10 am start.

CWP 2019/6 Whitby
Standard: Easy. Distance 6.5 miles.

A walk from Whitby Harbour up to the cinder path along the route of the disused Whitby to Scarborough railway line to Stainsacre, and then on a field path via Robin Hood field and Beacon Hill, to join the Cleveland Way near the disused lighthouse and Whitby Fog Signal station. The walk then continues along the Cleveland Way, with cliff edge views, to Whitby Abbey and church and down the famous 199 steps into the town to rejoin the coach at Whitby Harbour.

The climb up to the cinder path is gradual with a paved surface and seats for a rest; the cinder path itself is level. The path across the fields and the Cleveland Way may be muddy depending on the weather. There are a small number of kissing gates and stiles and care must be taken when crossing the A171 road when leaving Whitby and again near Stainsacre.

There may be time to explore Whitby before the coach leaves for Hawsker where the WI will provide us with a high tea including a ham salad, trifle and cakes.

Please indicate any dietary requirements, e.g. a vegetarian option, on the booking form.

Ingleby’s coach leaves the Memorial Gardens, Leeman Road, at 9 am and Rawcliffe Bar Park and Ride at 9 15 am. Cost per head £22, which includes coach travel, tea and all gratuities. Starting from the village of Keld and following the ancient Corpse Road, the walk ascended Kisdon Hill from which there were spectacular views of Upper Swaledale. We then followed the track down to Muker, crossing the famous hay meadows.

After time to look around the village, we continued along the Corpse Road, beside the River Swale, passing Ivelet Bridge which has a coffin stone and is reputed to be haunted by a headless dog, to Gunnerside where we had a ham salad tea with trifle and cakes.

This scenic walk was through undulating countryside and within the capability of averagely fit walkers. There were several stone stiles along the way.

Stamford Bridge/Kexby
Walking time about 3 hours.

The outward part of the walk to Kexby via Low Catton has fences between walkers and any animals. The return part following the River Derwent along the Minster Way may have animals grazing, with no fences. Anyone wishing to do a shorter walk could return the way they have come at any point on the walk.
The walk is on well-maintained meadow paths with four small barriers to surmount and no hills. At Kexby there is a 10-minute walk beside a busy road, on a safe footpath. Stamford Bridge has several pubs, a ‘Deli’, two cafes, a fish and chip shop and a bakery selling take-away food and drinks. The Balloon Tree farm shop and cafe is on the A166 (from York) shortly before reaching Stamford Bridge: this was ‘cafe of the year’ in 2018.
Meet in the (free) car park, map ref. 71.2x55.7 OS Landranger map York and Selby 105 for a 10am start.
Coming from York drive over the bridge and immediately turn right: the car park is beside the wooden Viking ship filled with flowers and an information board. Picnic tables are both there and just beyond the shops. Public toilets are opposite the shops. The River Derwent is a Special Area of Conservation and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, rich in flora and fauna.
