Walks Organiser:  walks@yant.org.uk

Thursday 27th December, 2018
Eileen Wishart will lead a walk around York.
Approx. 3.2 miles.
Our last walk this year is on Thursday 27 December, 2018 (NB not 28th as shown in the September Newsletter).
An easy walk around York, including some of the Snickelways and some parts which may not be familiar. The route is mainly on paths and city pavements. Some steps, which will need care in icy weather. Dogs on leads are allowed. Toilet facilities are available in Exhibition Square and the Central Library (York Explore) and there are plenty of places for refreshments after the walk.

Meet outside the Central Library (York Explore) for a 10 30am start.

Thursday 15th November, 2018
Rawcliffe Lake and Clifton Backies
Distance 4 – 5 miles.
A fairly flat walk from Rawcliffe Bar Park and Ride, no stiles, but there may be some mud on the Backies footpaths. We walk along the flood bank towards York, crossing the A19 and on towards Clifton Backies, the site of the old World War 2 airfield, which still has some outlines of the buildings. The site has an interesting history and is now a small developing nature reserve. We pass through a pleasant estate on our way to Rawcliffe Lake, which is manmade, created to provide flood relief. The lake is popular with wildfowl and migrating birds, particularly in winter. We then either return to the Park and Ride site and/or can go to the Doormouse on Shipton Road for lunch.

Meet at the Park and Ride buildings (toilets available there) for a 10am start.
If coming by car please park in Car Park C.

Tuesday 23rd October, 2018
Deighton to Naburn circular
Distance 4 ½ miles.
A walk to the south of York, leaving cars at the White Swan, Deighton, which is on the A19, about 1 ½ miles south of Crockey Hill. There is ample parking at the White Swan where it may be possible to get lunch after the walk. Alternatively, take the 415 bus from York which leaves Piccadilly every 20 minutes for a journey taking 20 minutes.
We walk on a footpath, marked in places from Deighton, in a roughly westerly direction through the fields and across the old East Coast Main Line railway track (ECML) entering Naburn along Vicarage Lane. We aim to reach the banks of the River Ouse at the historic location of the ferry. We will then walk south along the old ECML, now the York-Selby path and cycleway, until we reach the bridge of Moor Lane over the old railway. We then head across fields following footpaths towards Deighton, finally retracing our steps to the village.

No stiles along the route and no toilet facilities except possibly at the White Swan, the Blacksmith’s Arms at Naburn or nearby at the York Marina.
Meet at the White Swan, Deighton, for a 10am start.

Birstwith
Distance 6 miles.
A pleasant walk along the banks of the Nidd, across field, following part of the Nidderdale Way. There are numerous stiles - some are quite challenging and need care. There is also some road walking and the path is undulating in places.

To get to Birstwith take the B6165 from Ripley to Pately Bridge. Turn left at the cross-roads at Burnt Yates, approximately 2 and a quarter miles from Ripley and follow the Birstwith signs.
Park at the end of the village in the car park on the left, just past the school with a Post Office on the corner.
Meet at the car park for a 10.30am. start.

Please bring a drink and packed lunch (to be carried on the walk).

Tuesday 17th July, 2018
Allerthorpe
Distance 5 miles.
A walk through a delightful wood and heath area of Allerthorpe Common, part of which is now a nature reserve.
We hope the woodland will be dry in July but, as usual, there is always the risk of mud and uneven paths.
The walk takes us through Allerthorpe village, where there might be time to visit the delightful church of St Botolph. If not, there is the chance to return to the village after the walk to have lunch at the Plough Inn, or there are several places for lunch in Pocklington.

From York, on the A1079, take the turn on your right to Sutton-on-Derwent.
Take the first left turn on that road and follow it until you reach the Forestry Commission car park on the right. There are several gateways into the Common but keep going until you reach the proper car park.

Meet there for a 10am start.

Saturday 7th July, 2018
CWP 2018/4  -  Roseberry Topping/Captain Cook’s monument/Great Ayton
Standard fairly strenuous. Distance 5 ½ - 6 miles.
The walk starts near Great Ayton, where Captain Cook was educated. Starting at Roseberry Topping, North Yorkshire’s own Matterhorn, there will be a choice of either taking the steep path to the summit for magnificent views North or walking around the perimeter of the hill to avoid the climb. The path will then follow the Cleveland Way along the top of the escarpment to Captain Cook’s monument, with views along the Cleveland Hills and towards the Pennines in the West. Finally we shall descend the steep path to Great Ayton station, where the coach will be waiting to take us to tea, provided by Great Ayton WI – salad with pies, sausage rolls etc. followed by cakes and lashings of tea.

Please indicate any dietary requirements, eg a vegetarian option, on the booking form.

This is quite a short walk so we can take our time on the fairly steep ascents and descents. The views from the tops of these hills will make the effort worthwhile! Stout boots and walking poles are advisable.

Ingleby’s coach leaves the Memorial Gardens, Leeman Road, at 9am and Rawcliffe Bar Park and Ride at 9.15am.
Cost per head is £ 22, which includes coach travel, tea and all gratuities.

We cross the moor to Holgate, go over the pedestrian railway bridge and continue to the Railway Museum, where those who wish to do so may have lunch and/or look at the Museum*.
We complete the walk via the path at the side of the Royal Mail building to the Ouse, going along the riverside and over Skeldergate Bridge to return to St George’s Field.

*Those who do not wish to stop at the Railway Museum could continue to the end of the walk and perhaps eat at the Castle Museum.

It will be possible to rejoin the coach at Bigby, after about 6 miles. Some stiles and a steep ascent and descent at the beginning of the walk, then gentle undulations.

Old Malton and Norton
Distance 4.5 miles.
The walk was at Old Malton. We walked past the Roman remains then along the river to Castle Gardens. The next part followed a river through very muddy fields. It was like a quagmire and we did not get away unscathed. Some street walking.

Parking and meeting point was on the field opposite the Royal Oak pub at 47, Town Street, Old Malton, YO17 7HB for a 10am start. Food was available at the pub afterwards.

We first tried this walk in the autumn of 2016. On the day it rained heavily! We felt it would be good to give it another try. We had hoped that the weather would be kinder this time.

Saturday 7th April, 2018

Standard moderate. Distance 7 ½ miles.
A walk from Blakey Ridge, then down Farndale, including the Daffodil Walk between Church Houses and Low Mill. Lots of daffodils. Some care may be needed on this section, depending on conditions on the day, before reaching the upper Farndale Road. A mixture of riverside, country and moorland tracks.

Tea at Helmsley Methodist Church will include a ham salad and trifle. Please indicate any dietary requirements – eg a vegetarian option - on the booking form. Ingleby’s coach leaves the Memorial Gardens, Leeman Road, at 8:45am and Rawcliffe Bar Park and Ride at 9am. The cost per head is £21, which includes coach travel, tea and all gratuities.

Lunch was available afterwards at the Cross Keys where we met for a 10 am start.

Tuesday 16th January, 2018
Knavesmire Woods area
Distance 4 ½ miles.
A walk through Knavesmire Woods, Rowntree Park and the racecourse, easy terrain but it may be muddy and some chilly, brisk air over the racecourse.
