Heslington Village Circular Walk

Approximately 4 miles.

This is a circular 4 mile walk from Heslington Village, near York University and will start at 10:30 from the Outgang car park, Common Lane, south of Heslington Main Street.

From the roundabout at Heslington Hall, turn along Heslington Main street, turn right at the top and in a short distance turn right onto The Outgang, (signposted ‘playground’ and ‘The Outgang’). If you Google Heslington Cricket club or The Outgang play area you will see where you are aiming for. Buses 66 and 67 will take you from town to the roundabout at Heslington Hall from where it is a short walk to the start, following the directions above.

There are no toilets at the start but it is possible to take a small diversion to toilets on the University campus within half an hour of the start.

The walk goes through Heslington Village and through the University Campus East to the Sports Village. Here we follow a public footpath which crosses the A64 and return via quiet lanes to the Outgang car park. This is an easy walk with no stiles on mostly good surfaces but with a possible muddy section behind the Sports Village.

There is a pub and a sandwich shop on Heslington main street where refreshments may be obtained after the walk.

Barmby Circular Walk

Approximately 4.5 miles.

The walk will commence at 10.30 am from the free car park of the Barmby Tidal Barrage SE682286 where there are public toilets. The tidal barrage is at the end of the B1228 via the villages of Knedlington, Asselby and Barmby on the Marsh.

The circular walk is on Explorer 290 and 291 maps and is c4.5 miles long. It is flat and initially follows the flood bank of the river Ouse upstream having crossed over the river Derwent. It loops into the village of Hemingbrough with its attractive 15th century church.

The return half of the walk is along tracks taking in Barmby Ferry Road until the River Derwent is met. There is one patch of mud and waterproof boots would be advisable if the weather is wet.

After the walk refreshments may be available in Howden or Selby or at the cafe at Hollicarrs off the A19.
