Wednesday 16th November 2022

Millington (Updated details)

This approximately two and a half hour walk starts at the car park at Millington Wood, on the minor road between Millington and Huggate, at 10.30am.


We will walk back along the quiet road to Millington, where we will have a short stop at the Village Hall coffee morning. Toilets are available here. There should be an opportunity to look around the beautiful historic St. Margaret’s Church which is a Grade 1 listed building with many interesting features including the Emmaus stained glass window which depicts the scenery around Millington.


Suitably refreshed, we will leave the village and walk up the steepish hill following the Minster Way, with fine views across the valley to Millington Wood. The route drops down to Millington Beck then back along the road to the parking area.


(For those that would like a longer walk, a path leads from the parking area along the valley floor through the ancient woodland and back, approximately two miles.)


Lunch is available at the Gait Inn in Millington or in Pocklington.


Sturdy footwear and a walking pole are recommended.


Walk difficulty: moderate.



Tuesday 18th October 2022

Huttons Ambo

Easy with two gentle uphill stretches. Approximately 5 miles.

The walk starts at High Hutton off the A64. Parking is limited but is possible on the verge by the church dedicated to St. Margaret of Scotland with St. Barnabas in High Hutton. There is limited additional parking in Back Lane. Please car share if possible. The Coastliner bus service could be as it stops at the lane end to Huttons Ambo half a mile from the start of the walk. There are no toilets available.


The walk will start at 10.30am.  It is c5 miles with two gentle uphill stretches in the middle. There are no stiles and the paths are generally good. There may be a bit of mud. The route will go by St. Andrew's Lane to swing round into Huttons Bank Wood before reaching Low Hutton. The return is via Grange Farm.


After the walk refreshments are available at Welburn or at the Arboretum/Castle Howard.

Circular Walk starting at Thornton-le-Dale

Mostly Level.  Approximately 5 miles.

This is a circular, mostly level walk of approximately 5 miles starting in the centre of Thornton-le-Dale, past the church and across fields to Outgoing Lane and on to Sand Dale Fen. There is then a short section through Dalby Forest before returning along the beck side past Ellerburn to Thornton-le-Dale.


The standard is moderate but there are several stiles, parts could be muddy if there has been recent rain and there may be farm animals in some fields.


Meet for a 10:30 start in Thornton-le-Dale’s main car park where there are toilets in the left-hand corner. Please note that the parking charge of £4.80 for a stay of more than two hours can only be paid by card.


There are several places in Thornton-le-Dale where lunch may be taken after the walk.

Circular Walk starting at Tockwith

Level Walk.  Approximately 4.5 miles.

This is a circular, level walk of approximately 4.5 miles from Tockwith down to the River Nidd along Fleet Lane and Ness Lane and then downstream along the flood bank of the river to the weir opposite Mill Farm before returning to Tockwith by various lanes.


The walk is on field paths, stony tracks and tarmac, there are three stiles and there will be views over the Vale of York and the site of the Battle of Marston Moor (1644).


There is on street parking in Tockwith near the Spotted Ox pub, Westfield Road, YO26 7PY and the walk will start from the pub at 10:30am. There are no public toilets.


It may be possible to take lunch or obtain refreshments at the Spotted Ox or at cafes in Tockwith at the end of the walk.

Barton-upon-Humber

A 7 mile walk with the option of a walk across the Humber Bridge (time permitting)

The walk starts at the point where the Viking Way intersects Brigg Road – where there are no toilets – and then follows the Viking Way for approximately 7 miles to South Ferriby and along the south bank of the Humber to finish at the old tile works in Barton-upon-Humber. Here there is a café and toilets and the coach will be waiting to collect walkers and transport them to the Women’s Institute at South Cave for a ham salad tea.


Depending on timings it may be possible for walkers who wish for more exercise to walk the further one and a half miles across the Humber Bridge – once the longest single span in the world – to rendezvous with the coach on the north side.


The walk is mainly flat along good tracks, there are no stiles and the pace of the walk will be gentle.


Ingleby’s coach will leave Memorial Gardens at 08:45 and will be at the Rawcliffe Park and Ride car park at 09:00. Please indicate on the form where you will board the coach. The coach is expected to return to York by 19:00


The cost of the trip is £25 per person to include coach transport, afternoon tea and gratuities and if you wish to participate in the walk please complete the relevant section(s) of the form and send it with your cheque by the date shown on the form.

Wetherby to Linton and Collingham

Mostly Level.  Approximately 5.3 miles.

This is a circular, mostly level walk of 5.3 miles from Wetherby to Linton and Collingham, through Wetherby Ings, a public parkland, and along the riverbank with a small detour along the road at Linton.


The route follows paths through open meadows and some charming wooded areas but please note that there are two stiles and three sets of steps.


Meet at the bandstand next to the town car park, by the river, under the bridge at Wetherby for a 10:30 start. There are public toilets signposted a very short walk into town but no facilities in the car park or during the walk itself.

Osmotherley

A 7 mile walk with the option of a shorter walk and visit to Mount Grace Priory

Standard: moderate

NB. Walkers participate at their own risk and must be capable of completing the distance in open countryside over uneven ground, with some ascents and descents, in a variety of weather conditions. Suitable clothing and footwear must be worn and a packed lunch and drinks carried. 

Starting in Osmotherley we will walk up to the Lady’s Chapel, a popular site of pilgrimage, built in 1515.


The group will then split into two and walkers on the shorter walk will take the path through fields and woodland down to Mount Grace Priory, about two miles. There are three stiles on this path and a short, steepish slope in the wood so sturdy boots and walking poles are recommended. Entrance to Mount Grace Priory is free on presentation of National Trust or English Heritage membership cards which must therefore be carried.


Walkers will be picked up by bus at about 3.40pm, giving plenty of time to look around the Priory and the beautiful, landscaped grounds. There is a small café, but a packed lunch is advised.


The longer walk will follow part of the Cleveland Way through woods and moorland with excellent views. The undulating path goes to Scarth Nick then down to Cod Beck Reservoir and back to Osmotherley where the bus will leave at 4.00pm. Afternoon tea will be served by the Sowerby WI, near Thirsk.


Ingleby’s bus will leave Memorial Gardens at 9.00 am and Rawcliffe Bar P and R, car park at 9.15am.


We will return to York by 7.00pm. Cost of the trip to include coach, afternoon tea and gratuities is £25. Please send a cheque made payable to YANT, or pay on-line by BACS with a reference of your name and June Walk.

Cowhouse Bank near Helmsley

Standard : Fairly Easy.  Approximately 5 miles.

This is a 5-mile circular walk from Cowhouse Bank near Helmsley.


Meet at Cowhouse Bank car park at 10.30am (map ref 612888).


As you leave Helmsley on the A170 (to Pickering) take left turn to Carlton and keep going through Carlton and on to Cowhouse Bank car park on left.


Please note that there are no public toilets in the car park.


This is a fairly easy walk with lovely views to the high moors and across to the Hambleton Hills. The route follows a forest track (slight incline} to a lane and then round fields and farm track to road. There are no stiles.



Wednesday 25th May 2022

Naburn

This approximately 5-mile-long walk will start in Naburn and follow field paths to Gillrudding Grange and on nearly to Deighton before joining the Trans Pennine Trail along the disused York to Selby railway line to return to Naburn.


The field paths may be muddy after rain.


Meet for a 10:30 start at Naburn Village Hall in Vicarage Lane off the main road to the left in Naburn village.


Cars may be parked either in the hall car park or the road outside but please ensure that you do not block anyone’s access. There are no toilets.


Alternatively, the number 42 bus leaves from Piccadilly and takes about 20 minutes to arrive at Naburn school opposite the hall.

From Askham Bryan to Bilborough

This is a circular, level walk of 5 miles from Askham Bryan to the village of Bilborough where we will stop for a short break before returning to Askham Bryan.


The walk is mainly on public Rights of Way, footpaths, farm tracks and short roadway sections. Please note that there are several stiles to negotiate all of which are small dog friendly.


Meet for a 10am start at The Nags Head, Main Street, Askham Bryan (YO23 3QS). Cars may be parked in the car park at the rear of the pub and, if the rear door is open, we may use the toilet facilities at the start of the walk.


Walkers can take lunch at the pub at the end of the walk if they so wish.

Welburn, Four Faces and the Pyramid

This easy, four-mile walk through the Castle Howard estate is mainly on tracks and field paths, with one stile.


From the undulating path we will have views of several architectural features: the Four Faces monument, Hawksmoor Mausoleum and the Pyramid.


Meet at Welburn at 10.30am, parking on Main Street near the Crown and Cushion Inn where lunch may be available after the walk.

A five-mile walk from Coxwold

Meet at the village hall in Coxwold for a 10.30am start.


There is parking behind the village hall with a box for donations. The postcode of the village hall is YO61 4BB Grid reference: SE536 777.


There are toilets in the carpark at Coxwold (last checked a few months ago) and plenty of eating-places for lunch after the walk.


The walk will take us from Coxwold to Husthwaite and return via Beacon Bank. Total ascent on the walk is 146 metres.

A walk around Derwenthorpe at the edge of York - 4 1/2 miles.

10.30am meet at “The Centre@Burnholme” (Community Centre/Explore Reading Cafe), Mossdale Ave off Bad Bargain Lane, Tang Hall, York, YO32 0HA.


Enjoy the peaceful walkways and green spaces of Tang Hall and Derwenthorpe.


Easy, flat walking on established paths. Car parks each side of the Centre, which provides toilets and light refreshments as well as books to borrow! Distance 4 1/2 miles.
